The warm, coastal environments of Pacific Island groups are tough on construction materials. Many products suited to the larger land masses are not able to provide durability in these relatively warm marine environments.
Golden Bay Cement has developed Ciment Tropical (PM) for specification in these conditions where a superior performance is required.
Ciment Tropical (PM) is a general purpose blended cement, manufactured at Golden Bay Cement's Portland Manufacturing plant, near Whangarei, New Zealand. This plant has a 900,000 tonne annual capacity and supplies a range of cement products to New Zealand and South Pacific customers.
Golden Bay Cement's Portland Plant manufactures general purpose cements conforming to NZS 3122: 1995 and other relevant Standards.
Produced to exacting standards for use in the building and construction industries, these include:
- Ciment Tropical (PM) - a general purpose blended cement for applications requiring superior performance
- Ciment Ordinaire (GP) - a general purpose Portland cement
- Type HE - a high early strength cement
- Ciment Général (CG) - a blended cement for general applications.
Compared to general purpose cements, Ciment Tropical (PM) offers advantages while the concrete is being worked. Depending on specific mix design, mixes using Ciment Tropical (PM):
- are easier to pump
- require less water
- allow a longer setting time
- facilitate use of harsh aggregates

APPLICATIONS
Ciment Tropical (PM) is ideal for general concrete, mortars, renders and grouts. It can also be used as a binder in applications such as cement stabilisation. For uses requiring higher standards of performance, Golden Bay Cement manufactures other products engineered to these exacting expectations.
Supplementary cementitious materials:
Ciment Tropical (PM) blended cement is compatible with flyash, silica fume and ground granulated blast furnace slag. However, it is strongly recommended that trial mixes be performed to determine optimum addition rates.
Admixtures for concrete:
Ciment Tropical (PM) blended cement is compatible with most concrete admixtures used in practice.
Aggressive environments:
In areas subject to sulphate attack and marine environments, other products from Golden Bay Cement are preferred.
SPECIFICATION
Golden Bay Cement's Ciment Tropical (PM) has been designed to exceed the requirements of NZS 3122: 1995, Type GB. It has also been engineered for use in applications where NF P 15-301 Type CPJ-CEM II/A-L and NF P 15-302 "Ciments à usuage tropicale", NF P 15-318 "Ciments à Faible chaileur d'hydratation initiale et à teneur en sulfures limitée" are suitable.
It is manufactured using clinker produced at the plant and a specially selected limestone.
Golden Bay Cement's Ciment Tropical(PM) exceeds the minimum requirements for compressive strength in strength class 42,5 in NF P 15-301.
Golden Bay Cement's Ciment Tropical(PM) exceeds the minumin requirements for drying shrinkage for strength class 42,5 in NF P 15-301 and NF P 15-302.
Golden Bay Cement's Ciment Tropical(PM) generates a lower result than the maximum requirement for heat of hydration in NF P 15-318:1995.
