With an annual production capacity of in excess of 900,000 tonnes, the Portland plant is New Zealand's largest cement manufacturing operation.
Following a fundamental process change in 1983 Portland is also New Zealand's only dry process cement plant. The dry process is more energy efficient and environmentally friendly than older methods of manufacture.Portland's raw materials are quarried from two substantial seams of limestone, one behind the Portland plant and the other 32km north at Wilsonville.
